Choghadiya
Each day is divided into two time periods: daytime the period from sunrise to sunset and nighttime the period from sunset to sunrise. Each period contains eight Choghadiyas. To calculate the duration of each Choghadiyas, divide the respective time periods by eight. Thus, in each period any one of the seven different types of Choghadiyas will occur twice.
The sequence of daytime and nighttime Choghadiyas varies for each day. However, for each day, the sequence is the same. That is, the sequence for Monday is different to that for Tuesday, which in turn is different to that for Wednesday, etc. But, the sequence for each Monday is the same, as it is for each Tuesday, etc.In this method, 24 hours of a day are divided into 16 time segments of approximately one and a half hours each i.e., approx. 3.75 Ghati. Each of these time segments is called a Choghadiya due to its approximate duration of 3.75 Ghati. These Chawghariya / Choghadiyas are of either good or bad or medium neutral in nature. To begin any good work, only Good Choghadiyas are selected. It is believed that if a work is started in Good Choghadiya and other muhurta determining factors such as tithi, nakshatra, yoga etc. are also favourable, success is almost assured in ones efforts. In practice, good Choghadiya muhurtas are selected for beginning any new project, venture, business, important ceremonies like marriage, entrying a new house, name giving ceremony etc
There are seven types of Choghadiyas as follows:
