SUNPILLAR
From late November to early March, when the temperatures drop due to radiative cooling, the moisture in the air around Biei and Furano crystallizes and flutters in the sky. Then, when sunlight reflects off of these ice crystals, it creates a visual phenomenon called taiy&333;ch&363; in Japanese or a sun pillar in English a light beam shooting high up towards the Sun. It doesnt end quickly, often lasting around 10 minutes; it however is a very rare phenomenon which only occurs under very specific conditions. Both cold temperatures and adequate humidity are necessary to create a sun pillar, which is why it only appears about 10 times per season in few selected places around the world. I dont think anyone has ever photographed more than a couple of sun pillars in their entire career.
