Primal Scene of Japan TANADA
The beautiful scenery of multiple, overlapping rice terraces occupying mountain slopes or covering hilly areas is guaranteed to put you in a peaceful mood. These fields were built over many years by our ancestors as they diverted water from the mountains to produce the precious rice. But they werent only used to grow crops. These terracedfields also served as dams, which collected rainwater and prevented landslides, and as dwellings for all sorts of living things, helping to preserve the areas natural ecosystem. Still, a small cultivating area meant a smaller harvest which required more labor. Furthermore, a national decrease in farming and the aging of the Japanese society also meant less work being done on these fields. Lately, however, the rice terraces came to the publics attention after regions across the country began a campaign to preserve them for future generations as the countrys cultural heritage. To us, the people of Japan, the seasonal, primal beauty of rice terrace landscapes fills our hearts with nostalgia.
