Nishiyama Koichis The World of Uekusa Toun Woodwork Sculptor of Buddhist Images Photo Album
During their journeys, people sometimes find solace in the roadside statues of the divine Ojiz&333;sama or become both deeply moved and relieved by the compassionate figures of the Buddha Amida Nyorai, the holy Bodhisattvas or the goddess Kannon.
These religious images are cut and carved out of blocks of dried wood by the skilled hands of a Buddhist image sculptor who breathes new life into the material.
Continuing the family line of Buddhist woodwork artists, Uekusa Toun uses his expertise to create such and other supreme Buddhist sculptures. His modern take on the sacred art are the Round Buddhas, spheres cut out from square blocks of wood with the aid of many sharp chisels, and adorned by gentle expressions carved into them by the artist. The Buddhas pure, childlike eyes and mouths are sure to soothe the soul of anyone praying to them.
A spirit enthusiast such as myself can literally spend hours just staring from all sides at the statue of the biggrinned god of luck Hotei relaxing in the Sun with a cup in his hand.
The Buddhas indistinct, circular facial expressions, in the style of the sacred art of mandala, are perfect representations of Uekusa Touns unique worldview.
