Toronto Standard

Toronto Standard is a daily digital briefing on the life of the city, covering urban affairs, business, technology, culture and design and all the sparks that happen in between.

The Standard lived once before, publishing as a newspaper between 18481850. When our predecessor shut its presses, Toronto was a trading village of 23,000. There were no izakayas or charcuterie restaurants, people drove horses and it was still possible to contract rickets. How things have changed. Now we have dog bakeries and yerba mate cafés, smart phones and smart buildings. We dont care much whether people call todays Toronto a world class city, though we do know that its a global city. As such, the Standard provides a forum to look at life in other cities, and the challenges big urban centres face in the 21st century.

Now headquartered in the handsomely restored Burroughes Building, a Queen West landmark, the Standard presents provocative blend of reporting, interviews, commentary and video documentary that explores Toronto as a hub of creativity and innovation while never afraid to give the city the kick in the pants it sometimes deserves.
