The McKellar Slide Rule is actually two calculators in one – a Life Expectancy Calculator, and a Present Value Calculator.
The Life Expectancy Calculator will provide you with the remaining life expectancy of a Canadian of a given age and gender. Simply enter the age of the person, select male or female, and then Calculate. The calculator will then identify the remaining life expectancy of the average Canadian of that age and gender. This number can be carried over to the Present Value Calculator if desired.
The Present Value Calculator will provide the approximate present value of a future annual income stream. Simply enter the number of years for which payments are to be made, choose the desired discount rate from the table or enter your own, and enter the amount to be paid out per year, then select Calculate. The calculator will then identify the present value of the annual income stream paid monthly for the given term and discount rate. Our Present Value Calculator includes a section for calculations using the Ontario Discount Rate, pre-set discount rates between 1 and 6%, plus the ability to enter your own discount rate between 0 and 10%.
