Saints of India – Tulsidas
This Times Music app is an ode to Tulsidas 1532 1623, the author of Ramcharitmanas, the Ramayan written in the common mans dialects of Awadhi, Bhojpuri, Brijbhasa and Bundeli. His parents were Hulsi and Atmaram Dubey, Parashar gotra Brahmins. Tulsidas was born in Rajapur, Chitrakoot, in the presentday Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
The original Sanskrit composer of Ramayan, saint Valmiki was given a boon by Lord Hanuman, that he be born in Kaliyug, and compose the Ramayan in the common mans dialect of the times. And, it was widely believed that saint Valmiki had indeed reincarnated as Tulsidas. His Ramcharitmanas is revered in many Hindu homes of India and abroad. Written in Chaupai, couplets in verse form, it is also called as Tulsikrit Ramayana.
Though he called himself as a humble devotee of Lord Ram, he is hailed as a great poet and a saint in modern Hinduism. His guidance is considered as the trustworthiest in the conduct of daily life and in religious matters.
Aside from the Ramcharitmanas, Dohavali, Rudrastakam, Kavitavali, Baravai Ramayana, Gitavali, Hanuman Bahuka, Krishna Gitavali, Ramalala Nahachhu, Ramajna Prashna, Krishnavali, Janaki Mangal, Parvati Mangal, Vinaya Patrika, Sankata Mochana and Vairagya Sandipini are his other devotional literary works.
Besides these, he has composed, Hanuman Chalisa, a great devotional poem in praise of Lord Hanuman. Many Hindus recite this 15 minutes poem daily at home, to obtain Lord Hanumans grace.
Tulsidas is said to have lived during the times of Akbar. A sizeable portion of the handwritten manuscript of his Ramayana is reportedly still in existence.
